About the ISCLS

The ISCLS had its genesis in 1938with a meeting of minds of British optometrist Frank Dickinson and GermanWilhelm Söhnges. While WWII interrupted theircollaborations, they met again in 1951 in London, where they were joinedAmerican Jack Neill. All three were working on similar ideas, so they pooledtheir resources and launched the micro-corneal lens in 1952. Söhnges bought a house in Bavaria and it became a centre wherecontact lens practitioners from around the world could meet in a socialatmosphere and discuss mutual challenges and ideas. Since that time, the ISCLShas grown to become a leading global authority on contact lenses and comprisesmembers from around the world.

*The Herschel Medal is namedafter English astronomer Sir John Herschel, who first proposed the idea ofmaking a mold of a person’s eyes, to enable the production of corrective lensesthat could conform to the front surface of the eye.
